She Should’ve Known Better…
I work part time at a liquor store and there are times when we get quite the characters in. There are also times when we get people coming in who should, let’s say maybe kick their parents for not teaching them common sense.
When you shop in a liquor store there are some things you don’t do, trying to pay with someone else’s card is a big one. The other big one envolves your ID. If you don’t have it, maybe skip the liquor run.
We had a gal come in the other night and after grabbing what she wanted, walked up to the counter and gave the cashier (I’ll call him Clerk) her cash and a card. Now this Clerk is an older gentleman, very nice but also very by the book. He would have asked for her ID (which he did do) but before he could ask her anything she told him to pay part with the cash and the rest with her friend’s card. Her Friend’s card. No, not her’s, but her friend’s.
We both looked at her and asked her where her friend was. She responded by pointing behind her and said “she’s over there”. After being told that her friend would need to sign off on the purchase from her friend’s card, well she looked a little incredulous. We told her you can go and get your friend to sign, no problem but she decided it was too much work for her.
While she was back looking for a smaller bottle to get, Clerk and I discussed this young lady. I told him that if he didn’t feel comfortable selling to her, I would back him up. There is too much at stake in our personal lives to mess with it. Jail time and a fine, oh and also being fired is not very big on either of our list of things we want to do right now.
She walked back with her smaller bottle, a little annoyed that she didn’t get her way and Clerk is there again to help her. First he asks her for her ID, which she gives him. Then, he leans down on the counter and asks her “Can I aks you something?” A little nervous, she says “yeah”.
“Where is your friend?” Clerk asks her to which she responds by pointing out in the parking lot, “in the car.”
“You do know its a $5000 fine to sell to a minor. How old is your friend?”
“She’s twenty-two.” She is definetly not happy now.
“Well, have your friend come in if you want to use her card” he tells her, remember, I said he’s by the book.
“She can’t, she’s out there with her kid” she retorts back.
Well, the transaction happened maybe not as smooth and either party would have liked, and Clerk did watch the girl walk into the parking lot to make sure she was telling the truth. But here’s the moral of the story, if it isn’t your card ,or even your money, you do not get to pay with it. Maybe I’m old fashioned or even just a little morally inclined but that seems like a pre-requisite.
Shopping in a liquor store isn’t like it is in a retail store, there are things that just won’t fly. If a salesperson asks you for an ID, comply. Don’t be a smart ass. If a salesperson won’t sell to you, too bad. Better luck next time.

My sister was due to give birth yesterday. She’s been having contractions, but they’ve been too far apart to be anything too serious. I’m kind of excited about the new baby. Not as excited I was about Jacob, nothing beats the firstborn, well maybe. I think I’ll wait for baby numero dos to arrive first.
This baby will be the second grandchild in my immediate family and the second great-grandchild for my Grandparents. My sister is the youngest of us granddaughters, and the last one to want kids. See how the world works?
I think she’s the most anxious of all of us to be done. She’s carried this baby for nine months and now I think she’s ready to hold him. It doesn’t help that she’s retained so much that that her big toes look like Jim Brown’s bunion from “I’m Going to Get You Sucka”. When the tip of his shoe gets blown off, and his toe is just pulsing with the buniony goodness. Funny scene if you ask me.
Anyways, back to babies. I’m excited for my new nephew to arrive. I’m curious to see if he’ll look like his brother. I wonder if he’ll have webbed toes like his dad, and I wonder if he’ll have my sister’s dimples. I don’t think I’ll do a little dance like I did with Jacob, but I will be happy once he’s here.

Where I have been…
Okay, so it’s been a month or two since I’ve last blogged, bad me, but it’s been a few hard months for me and I guess it’s a little hard for me to get it out there. Having a little piece of me out there for everyone to read, including people I don’t know and people who don’t know me is a little daunting. I read other blogs and the comments they receive on their sites and at times I am just flabbergasted. I find it a little silly to make a comment on someone’s site that is just filled with judging meaness. I guess I’m glad I don’t have that kind of traffic.
For me, it all comes down to the need to write. I love writing, it is the most soothing thing for me to do. I have a head full of stories and sometimes I have to just sit there and write instead of sleep. I do sleep, it’s just falling asleep isn’t easy so I just turn on the old laptop and type out a 1000 or so words.
I suffer from Depression. I will have this my whole life, and actually I am okay with that. At this point in my life, I have decided to start better managing my Depression. The greastest fear I can think of when it comes to Depression and Therapy is realizing that you can’t do this alone, that you need help. Getting over this hump can be really hard, but it is far better than the alternative.
I have a really supportive family, this is something that we collectively have been dealing with for some time, about 2-3 generations, so we are well aware of the issues and pains of this disease. This isn’t the first time I’ve sought help and I’m pretty sure it won’t be the last.
I’m starting to feel like I’m getting somewhere and it feels nice. For most people, it is really wasy to get over or past things that have happened to them, and that is wonderful. For me, it is really hard. There are a lot of things that have contributed to my Depression and I won’t write about it here because it does involve someone I do care about. But, I will write about my experiences here in the present. I think that is fair.

I love free food, it tastes so much better then food you have to pay for, unless that food is potato-ish in nature. Cause nothing tastes better than a potato, nothing.

At the wedding last weekend, another cousin brought up that she had never heard of Metallica until I brought it up to her and that she liked them.
We’re talking old school Metallica here, like Battery. Not St. Anger, which I cannot listen too cause it reminds me of a construction site. Loud, obnoxious construction sites with drummers who are way to full of themselves.

I was in Iowa over the Labor Day weekend. I’m usually there at this time, my baby sister’s birthday is always around Labor day and it was on the Friday before this year. So Friday morning I drove down, 4 hours driving by cornfield after cornfield after cornfield. It it a bit of a boring drive, but I won’t complain too much, cause at least I’m not driving in Nebraska.
I arrived at my dad’s house just as he was walking home from dropping his car off for an oil change. My dad lives in a very small town, just over 3,000 people. Most of those are farmers so the town itself is very small. They have just one stoplight. So one can walk home from the car dealership, which is only like 5 blocks away.
For her birthday dinner, my sister wanted to go to Pizza Hut. I know, she’s a little odd, but she’s also a little like me. So she’s really not that odd. My dad, my stepmom and I shared a pizza while the little sis had her own cheese personal pizza. She’s not a very adventureous eater so I was surprised I was able to get her to try Ranch dressing with her pizza. She thought it was okay.
Saturday, one of my cousins was getting married. The service was nice, if not a bit long. I’m Lutheran and not used to Catholic weddings, no bashing here though. The bride was beautiful and I’m sure her jaw was aching from the huge smiled she had. Now, both my cousin (he just graduated from college recently) and his bride are young, but I hope they last.
During the reception, my dad, my stepmom, little sis and I shared a table with my stepmom’s brother and sister in-law. I was talking to my dad about my nephew and my aunt (at least she wanted me to call her Aunt when I was younger) interjected, “Who’s Jacob?”
“He’s my nephew,” I told her, “he just turned four.”
“Oh, I didn’t know your sister is married.”
“She’s not married.”
“Oh,” she said while rolling her eyes and sighing, “I just hate it when people are not married with kids.” She says this in front of my dad, who is divorced from my mom. Really, was that appropiate? I think it was a little rude of her to be so crude. This was the only bad part of the weekend, well, I did see a bush with bright crimson leaves on the way home. That one made me cry a little.
